Kappa Mikey premiered on the 25th of February 2006 on Nicktoons Network. It was the first half-hour series to premiere exclusively on that channel, and the show ran through two seasons until the 20th of September 2008.
Larry Schwarz created Kappa Mikey. He conceived the idea in 2000 while working at Rumpus Toys, a toy design company in New York City. Schwarz also ran Animation Collective, the production company that made the series.
Kappa Mikey was animated in Adobe Flash, with additional CGI elements rendered in Maya. Vehicles, weapons, and large set pieces were modeled in Maya and imported into Flash using the Toon Filter, while backgrounds were built in Maya and finished in Photoshop.
Michael Sinterniklaas voiced Mikey Simon, the nineteen-year-old American actor at the center of the series. Sinterniklaas also owns NYAV Post, the Manhattan studio where the show's audio was recorded.
Dancing Sushi was a short spin-off series produced from October 2007 to December 2007, featuring the sushi bump characters from the main show. The four characters were named Salmon, Larry, Roro, and Meep, and the series contained no dialogue.
A Kappa Mikey DVD was released on the 18th of September 2007 under the Starz Home Entertainment brand, collecting three first-season episodes and bonus material. A second DVD planned to include the full first season was announced in 2008 but was shelved and never released.
