Junko Kawano is a Japanese game designer, director, and writer who worked at Konami starting in 1993. She co-created the original Suikoden, wrote and produced Suikoden IV and Suikoden Tactics, directed Shadow of Memories, and served as character designer on Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes in 2024.
Kawano began as a character designer and illustrator on the original Suikoden in 1995. After Yoshitaka Murayama and other key team members departed in July 2002, she took creative control of the franchise and wrote, produced, and designed both Suikoden IV in 2004 and Suikoden Tactics in 2005.
Shadow of Memories is an adventure game written, directed, and designed by Junko Kawano, released for PlayStation 2 in 2001. It was released as Shadow of Destiny in North America and was later ported to Windows, Xbox, and PSP. Kawano also voiced a cat character in the game.
Rabbit and Bear Studios is a game development company co-founded by Junko Kawano in 2020, reuniting her with former Suikoden developers including series creator Yoshitaka Murayama. The studio developed Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, a spiritual successor to Suikoden, released in 2024.
When Murayama and other Suikoden team members left Konami in July 2002, Kawano took over creative control of the series. She went on to write, produce, and design Suikoden IV in 2004 and its spinoff Suikoden Tactics in 2005, though planned PlayStation 3 installments were never realized.
Kawano made two Nintendo DS titles: Time Hollow in 2008, which she wrote and designed as a successor to Shadow of Memories, and Zack and Ombra: The Phantom Amusement Park in 2010, which she wrote and directed.
