John Alexander Guy, born on the 16th of January 1949, is a British historian and biographer specialising in early modern England, particularly Tudor history. He teaches at Clare College, Cambridge, and has held posts at St Andrews, Bristol, UC Berkeley, the University of Rochester, and Johns Hopkins.
John Guy won the 2004 Whitbread Biography Award for My Heart is My Own: the Life of Mary Queen of Scots. The book, along with his companion volume Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart, also served as source material for the 2018 film Mary Queen of Scots.
John Guy was born in Warragul, Victoria, Australia, and moved to Britain with his parents in 1952. He was educated at King Edward VII School in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, and then at Clare College, Cambridge, where he achieved a First in history in 1970.
At Cambridge, John Guy studied under Geoffrey Elton, the leading Tudor specialist of the era. Guy went on to complete his PhD on Thomas Wolsey in 1973 and was appointed a Research Fellow at Selwyn College in 1970.
John Guy's Tudor books include My Heart is My Own: the Life of Mary Queen of Scots, Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart, A Daughter's Love: Thomas More and his daughter Meg (2008), and Elizabeth: the forgotten years (2016). He has also written juvenile books on Tudor history.
John Guy is married to Julia Fox, a former history teacher and author of Jane Boleyn: The Infamous Lady Rochford. She is his second wife. He has a son born in 1979 and a daughter born in 1987 from his previous marriage.
