John F. Marszalek is an American historian known for his scholarship on Civil War generals, particularly Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman. He served as Executive Director and Managing Editor of the Ulysses S. Grant Association and The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant from 2008 to 2022, and has published more than 300 articles and book reviews along with 13 books.
Sherman: A Soldier's Passion for Order, published by Free Press in New York in 1993, was a finalist for the 1993 Lincoln Prize. The book examined Sherman's character and military career during the Civil War.
Marszalek's 1972 book Court-Martial: A Black Man in America was adapted by Showtime into a motion picture titled Assault at West Point: The Court-Martial of Johnson Whittaker. The book was also reissued in 1994 under that same title by Collier Books through Macmillan.
Marszalek became Executive Director and Managing Editor of the Ulysses S. Grant Association and The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant after John Y. Simon's death in July 2008. He held the role until 2022, when Anne Marshall was appointed as his replacement and Marszalek was named Executive Director Emeritus.
Marszalek won the Nevins-Freeman Award on the 13th of April 2018. The Civil War Round Table of Chicago describes it as the most prestigious honor the organization gives.
Marszalek spent most of his career at Mississippi State University, where he taught for 29 years before retiring in 2002 as Professor Emeritus. In 1994 he was appointed the William L. Giles Distinguished Professor there.
