John Charles Dollman (the 6th of May 1851 - the 11th of December 1934) was an English painter and illustrator who exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1870 to 1912. He was known for mythological compositions, bold animal paintings, and his depiction of Lawrence Oates titled A Very Gallant Gentleman.
His best known work is possibly A London Cab Stand (1888), which focuses on a group of horses in a stormy scene. Dollman made at least three variants of this picture, and the original hangs in the Museum of London.
Officers of the Inniskilling Dragoons commissioned A Very Gallant Gentleman in 1913, the year after Oates died on Scott's Antarctic expedition. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1914 and now hangs in the Cavalry Club in London.
Dollman's works are in collections across several countries. The Immigrants' Ship (1884) is in the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, Ride of the Valkyries is in the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth, and A London Cab Stand is in the Museum of London. Other works are held by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Harris Museum in Preston, and the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.
Some of Dollman's early work has been said to have influenced Van Gogh, likely through Dollman's illustrations in magazines such as The Graphic, which he contributed to during and after the 1880s and which reached a broad European readership.
Guy Dollman was a noted zoologist and taxonomist, and the son of painter John Charles Dollman. John Charles Dollman died on the 11th of December 1934, aged 83.
