Colonists from the English East India Company arrived on the north-western coast of Saint Helena in 1659. They named this new town Jamestown after James, Duke of York who later became King James II of England.
Napoleon arrived aboard a 74-gun ship on the 21st of October 1815 during his exile to the remote island. He resided at The Briars in Jamestown for several months before moving to Longwood House in December.
By the time the naval station closed in the 1870s an estimated 25,000 slaves had been rescued. About 5,000 of those individuals died shortly after arrival and were buried in Rupert's Valley.
