The publicly stated goal of James Cook's first voyage was to observe the 1769 transit of Venus from Tahiti. Additional secret objectives included searching for the hypothesised continent of Terra Australis and claiming lands for Britain.
James Cook was killed on the 13th of February 1779 during an affray with Hawaiian warriors at Kealakekua Bay. He died alongside four marines after attempting to recover a stolen cutter by kidnapping the Hawaiian king Kalani'ōpu'u.
James Cook implemented strategies to prevent scurvy including providing wort to the crew and regular resupply of fresh food. He did not lose a single crew member to the disease during his first circumnavigation of the globe and was awarded the Copley Medal for these contributions.
James Cook became the first recorded Europeans to see the Hawaiian Islands on the 18th of January 1778. He made landfall at Waimea harbour on Kaua'i and the nearby island of Ni'ihau before sailing north to explore the west coast of North America.
