James Chadwick discovered the neutron in February 1932. He announced this discovery in a letter to Nature titled Possible Existence of a Neutron after only about two weeks of experimentation.
James Chadwick spent four years in the Ruhleben internment camp in Germany after being stranded when World War I broke out. He managed to set up a laboratory in the stables and conducted scientific experiments using improvised materials such as radioactive toothpaste.
James Chadwick became the only man apart from Leslie R. Groves and his second in command to have access to all American research and production facilities for the uranium bomb. He moved to Los Alamos in early 1944 and worked closely with Groves to support the project.
