The name Hulu derives from two Mandarin Chinese phrases meaning to be happy and to be pleased. Jason Kilar, the service's first CEO, explained that the name was inspired by a Chinese proverb suggesting that happiness is found in the sharing of content.
Hulu launched as a joint venture between News Corporation and NBC Universal on the 29th of October 2007. The platform began as a simple aggregator streaming recent episodes from the networks owned by its founders, including ABC, NBC, and Fox.
Disney holds full ownership of Hulu after acquiring the remaining stakes held by AT&T and Comcast in 2019 and 2023 respectively.
