HexD is a music microgenre that uses heavy bitcrushing to create distorted, digital, hazy, and psychedelic sounds. Bitcrushing produces distortion through the reduction of bandwidth and digital audio data applied to specific instruments or entire master tracks.
Stacy Minajj coined the term hexD after releasing her DJ mix Rare RCB hexD.mp3 in June 2019. Untranced released the mixtape titled Deleted Seniors in 2011 which featured EDM mixed with heavy bitcrushing as one of the first aesthetic uses of this effect.
Visual aesthetics draw influence from anime and internet aesthetics including early Web 2.0 era iconography and artwork. These visuals connect primarily to the 2006 online GIF editor Blingee and remain tied to these early digital platforms.
In March 2021, Alternative Press magazine labelled the group Fax Gang as hexDers. The publication stated that ZBITO18 and the rest of HELLOKITTYWAFFENDIVISION provide a comprehensive catalog of hexD-ed neon Myspace-core rave insanity.
The genre was briefly known as surge after the Dismiss Yourself compilation album Surge Compilation Vol. 1 which release occurred in 2020. On the 5th of April 2021, the label released Surge Compilation Vol. 1 again to further popularize the movement.
