Hellraiser was written and directed by Clive Barker, and it was his feature directorial debut. Barker had prior experience directing plays and two short films, but Hellraiser in 1987 was his first feature-length film.
Hellraiser was made for $900,000 and grossed $30 million worldwide. In the United States and Canada alone it earned $14,564,000, and in the United Kingdom it earned £763,412.
The Ontario Film and Video Review Board banned Hellraiser by a 3-2 majority vote, citing brutal graphic violence with blood-letting throughout, horror, degradation, and torture. The ban was lifted in August 1987 after approximately 40 seconds of footage were removed.
Christopher Young composed the score for Hellraiser after Clive Barker's preferred choice, the electronic group Coil, was rejected by New World Pictures. Editor Tony Randel suggested Young, who had previously scored A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge in 1985.
Nine sequels to Hellraiser were produced. Doug Bradley reprised his role as Pinhead in the first seven of those sequels.
Hellraiser was originally filmed under the working title Sadomasochists from Beyond the Grave. Clive Barker also wanted to call the film Hellbound, but producer Christopher Figg proposed the title Hellraiser.
