Goro Miyazaki is a Japanese landscape architect and animation director born on the 21st of January 1967 in Tokyo. He is the son of Hayao Miyazaki and has directed three feature films: Tales from Earthsea (2006), From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), and Earwig and the Witch (2020), as well as the television series Ronja, the Robber's Daughter (2014-2015).
Goro Miyazaki trained as a landscape architect at Shinshu University's School of Agriculture and worked as a construction consultant specializing in park and garden design. He led the design of the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka starting in 1998 and served as its director from 2001 to June 2005.
Goro Miyazaki originally joined Tales from Earthsea as a consultant. After he drew the storyboards, producer Toshio Suzuki decided he should direct the film. Goro's father Hayao opposed the decision, believing his son lacked directing experience, and the two reportedly did not speak during the film's development.
Tales from Earthsea grossed $68 million worldwide after its release on the 29th of July 2006. It received positive reviews in some quarters but mixed comparisons to other Ghibli films. At the end of 2006, it received Japan's Bunshun Raspberry Award for Worst Movie, and Goro received the award for Worst Director.
From Up on Poppy Hill won the 2012 Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year. The film was released in Japan on the 16th of July 2011 and was based on the 1980 manga Kokurikozaka kara by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsuro Sayama.
Earwig and the Witch, adapted from Diana Wynne Jones's novel of the same name, was announced as the first full 3D CG animated film produced by Studio Ghibli. It had its world premiere on the 18th of October 2020 at the Lumiere Film Festival and premiered on NHK General TV in Japan on the 30th of December 2020.
