The predecessor company, Gonzo Inc., was established on the 11th of February, 1992, by former Gainax staff members. The current legal entity, GDH K.K. (later renamed Gonzo), was established on the 22nd of February, 2000.
Gonzo was delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange on the 30th of July, 2009, after its financial liabilities exceeded its total financial assets. The studio had notified investors of this in March 2008, and the deficit for the 2008-2009 fiscal term was estimated at over thirty million US dollars.
Gonzo is owned by ADK. A reverse stock split announced in March 2020 reduced issued shares from 38,800 to 24, making the studio a wholly owned subsidiary of ADK, which then planned to transfer all shares to Shinichiro Ishikawa.
Gonzo produced Full Metal Panic!, Last Exile, Kaleido Star, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Hellsing, Samurai 7, and Strike Witches, among many others. The studio also co-produced Transformers: Galaxy Force with Hasbro and Takara.
Gonzo recovered by licensing its back catalogue to western online streaming services, including Netflix. Titles such as Rosario + Vampire performed well with western audiences, and by the April-September 2012 period the studio was posting higher than expected profit margins.
Gonzo is considered among the first anime companies to license its titles through Crunchyroll, which was at the time still largely known for anime piracy. The studio began streaming content on YouTube, Crunchyroll, and BOST as of 2008.
