Gábor Betegh is a Hungarian philosopher born on the 20th of June 1968, specialising in ancient philosophy. He is the eighth Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy at Cambridge University and is best known for his 2004 book The Derveni Papyrus, a critical edition and study that won a Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award.
Betegh became the Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy at Cambridge in October 2014, succeeding David Sedley. He is the eighth person to hold the chair and is also a Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge.
The Derveni Papyrus is a fragmentary ancient Greek text that touches on early Greek religion, cosmology, and philosophy. Betegh first studied it for his PhD dissertation and later published The Derveni Papyrus with Cambridge University Press in 2004, producing both a critical edition and a scholarly interpretation of the document.
Betegh studied at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, at Cambridge University under David Sedley, and at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris under Jacques Brunschwig.
