Family Force 5 was formed in 2004 in Atlanta, Georgia, by brothers Solomon Olds, Joshua Olds, and Jacob Olds, along with friends Nathan Currin and Brad Allen. Allen was later replaced by Derek Mount.
The band performed first as The Brothers, then Ground Noise, then The Phamily, before a copyright conflict with Prince's band, The Family, forced one more rename. That change produced the name Family Force 5, first used for their 2006 debut album.
Joshua Olds, known as Fatty, was admitted to intensive care on the 30th of November 2009 after his condition deteriorated, and doctors confirmed kidney failure requiring dialysis. He made a full recovery and returned to performing with the band.
Family Force 5 rebranded as FF5 in early 2018 after drummer Teddy Boldt left the band, leaving only Jacob and Joshua Olds as members. The pair released the single 'Fire on the Highway' and the EP El Compadre before playing their most recent show on the 17th of March 2018.
Family Force 5 began signaling a reunion on the 8th of February 2026 with Instagram reels, after nearly seven years of inactivity. On the 18th of February 2026, the band confirmed they would reunite on stage at the Vans Warped Tour in Orlando, Florida.
Family Force 5's debut album, Business Up Front/Party in the Back, was released on the 21st of March 2006 and produced hit singles including 'Kountry Gentleman' and 'Earthquake.' Christian critics disparaged it for lacking overt Christian content, while non-Christian critics praised it for the same reason.
