Eric Christiansen entered the world on the 15th of September 1937 in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. His early education took place at Charterhouse School before he joined the ranks of the Northamptonshire Regiment.
Christiansen became a fellow of New College after completing a thesis on modern Spanish history. He subsequently specialized in medieval history while holding this position at Oxford University and eventually earned the title of fellow emeritus upon retirement.
Macmillan published The Northern Crusades, the Baltic and the Catholic Frontier, 1100-1525 in 1980. This volume examined the Baltic region during a period spanning four centuries and focused on the expansion of the Catholic frontier across northern Europe.
Wiley Blackwell released The Norsemen in the Viking Age in 2002 as part of The Peoples of Europe series. Christiansen used this publication to explore the lives of Norsemen during their most active historical period and provided detailed analysis of their movements and societal structures.
Boydell Press issued Dudo of St Quentin: History of the Normans with translation and notes in 1998. Earlier, the Viking Society for Northern Research had published The Works of Sven Aggesen: Twelfth-century Danish Historian in 1992.
