River Plate scouts eventually took interest in the boy who played for a local side called Club La Recova before anyone noticed his potential. Argentine newspaper Clarín reported in September 2020 that he actually arrived in 2006 while he claimed to have been six years old when joining by February 2023.
Benfica agreed to pay €10 million plus €8 million in add-ons for 75% of Fernández's economic rights on the 23rd of June 2022. He made his debut on the 2nd of August in a 4, 1 home win over Midtjylland and won Primeira Liga Midfielder of the Month awards for consecutive months including October and November.
Fernández scored his first international goal on the 26th of November 2022 at Lusail Iconic Stadium which made him the second youngest player ever to score a World Cup goal for Argentina behind Lionel Messi. He received the Young Player Award for his performances throughout the competition after Argentina defeated France 4, 2 in penalties following a 3, 3 draw.
On the 11th of September 2024 he received a six-month disqualification from driving with a court imposing a 12-point penalty and fined him £3,020. These penalties stemmed from two incidents involving a Porsche Cayenne registered under his name occurring on Carmarthen Road in Swansea and Church Street in Llanelli.
