Dražen Petrović died on the 7th of June 1993 in a traffic accident on the Autobahn 9 near Denkendorf, close to Ingolstadt in Bavaria, Germany. He was a passenger in a Volkswagen Golf that struck a truck which had broken through the highway median. He died of severe head injuries on impact at the age of 28.

Petrović won Olympic silver medals in 1988 and 1992, and a bronze in 1984. With Yugoslavia he won the FIBA World Championship gold in 1990 and bronze in 1986, and the FIBA EuroBasket gold in 1989 and bronze in 1987. He was named FIBA World Championship MVP in 1986 and FIBA EuroBasket MVP in 1989.
Dražen Petrović was posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2013, players at the FIBA EuroBasket voted him the best European basketball player in history.
