Douglas MacArthur was born on the 26th of January 1880 at Little Rock Barracks in Arkansas. He grew up on a succession of Army posts in the American Old West where he learned to ride and shoot before he could read or write.
Douglas MacArthur was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross twice and the Silver Star seven times during World War I. He was wounded multiple times including being gassed during the Battle of Saint-Mihiel while serving as chief of staff of the 42nd Division.
Douglas MacArthur left the Philippines in March 1942 after his forces were overwhelmed following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the 8th of December 1941. He escaped from Corregidor Island to Australia to vow that he would return to the Philippines.
Douglas MacArthur was removed from command in April 1951 after refusing to adhere to President Harry S. Truman's policy of limited war. His public criticism of the administration's strategy led to his dismissal following major defeats after China's entry into the war in October 1950.
Douglas MacArthur died in Washington, D.C., on the 5th of April 1964 after retiring from active duty. He served as chairman of the board of Remington Rand following his dismissal from command in Korea.
