Donald L. Miller, born in 1944, is an American biographer and historian who holds the John Henry MacCracken Professor of History emeritus chair at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. He is a New York Times bestselling author of seven books and a historical consultant for PBS and HBO productions.
Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, published by Simon and Schuster in 2007, documents the USAAF bomber crews who flew missions over Europe during World War II. It draws on interviews, oral histories, and archival sources to cover life in wartime England and in the German prison camps where tens of thousands of airmen were held.
The Masters of the Air miniseries premiered on the 26th of January 2024 on Apple TV+. HBO had originally confirmed the project in 2013; it moved to Apple TV+ in 2019 and focused on the 100th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force.
Miller has received six awards for excellence in teaching, five fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Great Lakes National Book Award for Outstanding Book in 2009, the Victorian Society's Book of the Year, and the Van Artsdalen Award for Outstanding Research. His research contribution to the HBO series The Pacific helped that production win two Emmy Awards in 2010.
