Richard Quitevis was born on the 7th of October 1969 and grew up in San Francisco's Excelsior District on Moscow Street. He attended Balboa High School and graduated in 1987 after beginning to manipulate records at the age of 15.
DJ Qbert formed the group FM20 in 1990 and later the Invisibl Skratch Piklz to apply the concept of a band to turntablism. He won the DMC USA Championship in 1991 and the DMC World DJ Championships in 1992 and 1993 with Mix Master Mike.
DJ Qbert released the album Wave Twisters in 1998, which served as the foundation for an animated feature film of the same name released in 2001. The project required animators to create images to match the pre-recorded music, mirroring the production of Disney's Fantasia.
In the late 2000s, DJ Qbert collaborated with Vestax to develop the QFO, an all-in-one scratching instrument that combined a turntable with a mixer's crossfader. He also introduced the Qbert turntable cartridge in 2006, a model produced by Ortofon to refine sound quality and responsiveness.
DJ Qbert launched the Qbert Skratch University in May 2009 through the ArtistWorks website to provide structured education for DJs. The online learning school offered lessons ranging from basic scratching techniques to advanced composition strategies to professionalize the craft.
DJ Qbert was awarded a DMC Legend jacket in 2016 at the DMC World DJ Championships and was named America's Best DJ in 2010. He was inducted into the DMC DJ Hall of Fame alongside Mix Master Mike to recognize his decades of contribution to the art of DJing.
