Šuker scored six goals in seven matches at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, winning the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer. He also won the Silver Ball as the second-best player of the tournament, behind Ronaldo of Brazil.
Šuker scored 45 goals in 68 senior appearances for Croatia, making him the country's all-time leading goal scorer. He also scored one goal in two senior appearances for Yugoslavia, bringing his total senior international tally to 46 goals across 70 FIFA-recognised caps.
