David Lynch died on the 16th of January 2025 at his daughter Jennifer's home in Los Angeles. He was a lifelong chain smoker whose emphysema was worsened after he was evacuated from his home during the January 2025 Southern California wildfires.
Lynch's first film was Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times), made in 1967 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He spent $150 on the cheapest 16mm camera he could find and filmed it in an abandoned upper room at the academy. It was described as "57 seconds of growth and fire, and three seconds of vomit" and won joint-first prize at the academy's annual exhibit.
Lynch disowned Dune because he did not have final cut and felt he was "subconsciously making compromises" throughout production. Much of his footage was removed from the theatrical release. When Universal Studios later released an extended cut for syndicated television, Lynch had his name replaced with the pseudonym Alan Smithee and invented the screenwriter credit "Judas Booth" to reflect his feeling of betrayal.
Lynch launched the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and Peace in July 2005. It funds Transcendental Meditation scholarships for middle and high school students, supports research on the technique's effects on learning, and provides meditation lessons for veterans and other at-risk populations.
ABC executives insisted that Lynch and Mark Frost reveal Laura Palmer's killer earlier than Lynch wanted, believing public interest was declining. After that revelation, the show moved from Thursday to Saturday night and was canceled following a ratings drop. Lynch directed the final episode and deliberately ended it on a cliffhanger, later saying, "That's not the ending. That's the ending that people were stuck with."
Lynch received an Academy Honorary Award, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival, a Palme d'Or and Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, two César Awards, and a posthumous Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement. He also received four Academy Award nominations for Best Director, nine Primetime Emmy Award nominations, and two British Academy Film Award nominations.
