Daulat Rao Sindhia ascended to the throne of Gwalior on the 12th of February 1794 at the age of fifteen. He inherited a kingdom that had been transformed into a formidable military power by his predecessor Mahadji Scindia.
British forces led by Arthur Wellesley defeated the combined armies of Daulat Rao Sindhia and Yashwantrao Holkar at the Battle of Assaye. This engagement took place on the 22nd of September 1803 and resulted in major defeats for Scindia.
The Treaty of Surji-Anjangaon signed on the 30th of December 1803 forced Daulat Rao Sindhia to cede significant territories including those between the Yamuna and the Ganges, South Haryana, and the district of Bharuch. The ninth article of the treaty also deprived him of the fortresses of Gwalior and Gohad.
Pierre Cuillier-Perron succeeded Benoît de Boigne as commander of the army for Daulat Rao Sindhia. His favoritism towards French officers created discontent within the regular corps and weakened the internal cohesion of the state.
Daulat Rao Sindhia ruled as Maharaja of Gwalior from 1794 to 1827. He maintained a degree of independence that was rare among Indian rulers until his death in 1827.
