His parents spent time as children inside Japanese internment camps before he was born, which shaped his upbringing. He attended high school during a period when hip-hop culture began to take hold in the city and eventually graduated from San Francisco State University.
He received his first major recognition through work on Kool Keith's album Dr. Octagonecologyst released in 1996. Before that commercial breakthrough, he issued his debut EP titled Music to Be Murdered By in 1989.
Nakamura joined forces with Prince Paul to create Handsome Boy Modeling School in 1999. Their projects included guest musicians like Róisín Murphy, DJ Shadow, RZA, and Cat Power.
