The Crunchyroll Anime Awards began on the 28th of January 2017 with Yuri on Ice winning Anime of the Year. This result triggered allegations of voting fraud and aggressive fan manipulation that forced organizers to rethink their entire voting structure.
Since the 6th edition winners are determined by a 70:30 ratio of judge to public votes. Judges submit up to five potential candidates for each category and the top six candidates move to a one-week public voting phase.
The 7th ceremony held on the 4th of March 2023 marked the first time the event took place at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo. This location has hosted the ceremony ever since including the 9th ceremony on the 25th of May 2025.
Jujutsu Kaisen leads the list of winners with 22 awards. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba follows with 19 awards and Attack on Titan has 17 awards.
Starting from the 10th edition the eligibility period returns to its previous format of eligibility from January to December. The 9th edition held on the 25th of May 2025 covered October 2023 to December 2024 to accommodate this change.
