DJ Kool Herc initially called him A-1 Coke at first. Later the moniker shifted to Nasty Coke as they worked together for about five or six parties until the final name settled.
The partnership began when La Rock joined Kool Herc for a party in 1973 that celebrated Herc's sister Cindy's birthday. They formed the Herculoids crew together shortly after and laid groundwork for hip-hop music starting around 1973.
Kool Herc was stabbed at a party which triggered a violent response from La Rock who went looking to kill the perpetrator. After this incident he decided to step away from hip hop entirely because he did not want to continue if murder remained part of the game.
Boogie Down Productions immortalized his place in history with the 1986 song South Bronx. KRS-One rapped about Coke La Rock, Kool Herc, and Bam in the opening lines of that track.
