Cobra Starship was founded in 2005 by Gabe Saporta, formerly the bassist of Midtown. Saporta conceived the band after a "vision quest" in the Arizona desert, where he spent time with Native American tribes and smoked peyote. He wrote the debut album alone in a rented house in the Catskill Mountains before recruiting any bandmates.
"Good Girls Go Bad," released in May 2009, was Cobra Starship's breakthrough single. It featured Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester, peaked at number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and was certified double platinum by the RIAA with two million copies sold in the United States.

Cobra Starship's music is described as dance rock, electropop, pop punk, and synthpop, drawing on 80s new wave and electronic music.
