Clifford Ando is an American classicist born in 1969 who specializes in Roman law and religion. He is the Robert O. Anderson Distinguished Service Professor of Classics, History and the College at the University of Chicago, where he also chaired the Classics Department from 2017 to 2024.
Imperial Ideology and Provincial Loyalty in the Roman Empire, published in 2000, is Ando's most decorated work. It won the 2003 Goodwin Award from the American Philological Association, one of the field's leading prizes.
Ando earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1990 and his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1996.
