The Cleveland Browns began play in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference. Taxicab magnate Arthur B. McBride secured the franchise for Cleveland that year.
A compromise reached in early 1996 allowed owner Art Modell to establish the Baltimore Ravens while retaining all contracts for existing personnel. The NFL regarded the franchise as suspended rather than terminated so its intellectual property remained in trust for reactivation by 1999.
