Bryan Ansell co-founded Citadel Miniatures with backing from Games Workshop in December 1978. Ansell had previously co-founded Asgard Miniatures in August 1976 and had earlier experience at Conquest Miniatures.
Citadel switched to a lead-free white metal alloy in February 1997. The change was driven by concerns about lead poisoning, particularly the risk posed to children.
Citadel Finecast is a range of resin miniature models announced by Games Workshop on the 16th of May 2011. The line received mixed reviews; at least one UK retailer, Wayland Games, warned on their website that it was suitable for experienced modellers only.
