Christopher Kelly is a British-Australian classicist and historian born in London in 1964 and raised in Sydney. He specialises in the later Roman Empire and the classical tradition, and is Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Cambridge.
In his 2009 book The End of Empire, Kelly argued that Attila the Hun should be seen as a thoughtful and effective political and military leader, rather than the brutal destroyer of popular legend. The work was characterised as a semi-popular treatment of late imperial collapse.
Kelly was elected Master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge on the 12th of July 2017. His term as Master began in Michaelmas 2018.
Kelly's doctoral thesis, submitted in 1993 at Trinity College, Cambridge, was titled "Corruption and bureaucracy in the later Roman Empire". It established the research focus on late Roman administration that would define his subsequent scholarly career.
Kelly is married to Shawn Donnelley, an American philanthropist and great-great-granddaughter of Richard Robert Donnelley, founder of R.R. Donnelley and Sons. They met at Corpus Christi College in 2000 and married in Chicago in 2008. Donnelley is founder and President of Strategic Giving and has been elected a Guild Fellow at Corpus Christi College.
Kelly edited both the Proceedings of the Cambridge Philological Society and the Cambridge Classical Journal from 2000 to 2006. He later served as editor of the Journal of Roman Studies from 2018 to 2019 and was President of the Cambridge Philological Society.
