Charlie Chaplin was an English comic actor, filmmaker, singer, film editor and composer who rose to fame in the silent film era. He became a worldwide icon through his screen persona, the Tramp, and is considered one of the film industry's most important figures.
Charlie Chaplin was born on the 16th of April 1889 in London, to Hannah Chaplin and Charles Chaplin Sr. He believed he was born at East Street, Walworth, in South London, though there is no official record of his birth.
Chaplin created the Tramp costume for his second film at Keystone in 1914, choosing baggy pants, a tight coat, a small hat, large shoes and a small moustache so that everything would be a contradiction. The character debuted to audiences in Kid Auto Races at Venice on the 7th of February 1914.
Chaplin was forced to leave the United States in 1952 after he was accused of communist sympathies and scandalised by a paternity suit and marriages to much younger women. As he sailed for the London premiere of Limelight, Attorney General James P. McGranery revoked his re-entry permit.

Chaplin died at home in the early morning of Christmas Day 1977 after a stroke in his sleep, aged 88. On the 1st of March 1978, Roman Wardas and Gantcho Ganev stole his coffin and held the body for ransom, before police recovered it and re-interred it in a reinforced concrete vault.
