The Building and Wood Workers' International was established in 2005 through the merger of the International Federation of Building and Wood Workers and the World Federation of Building and Wood Workers.
The BWI represents more than 12 million workers through 350 member organisations in 135 countries.
The BWI is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It also maintains regional and project offices in Panama, Malaysia, South Africa, India, Australia, Burkina Faso, Bulgaria, Lebanon, Kenya, South Korea, Russia, Argentina, Peru, and Brazil.
In October 2024, the BWI filed a complaint against FIFA describing what it called an epidemic of abuses against migrant employees in Saudi Arabia. The BWI holds a World Congress every four years, where delegates from member organisations set priorities and elect a World Council. The World Council meets annually and appoints a World Board, which handles administration and meets twice a year.
