Kate Madison held a vision for a Tolkien fan film in 2003. The project began as a modest plan but grew over time. By April 2006, the team conducted their first test shoot.
Madison spent her life savings of £8,000 on the production. An online trailer campaign generated an extra £17,000. This brought the total budget to £25,000.
The bulk of filming happened at the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village in Suffolk. Scenes also appeared in Epping Forest and Snowdonia National Park. Additional shooting took place inside Clearwell Caves and the Brecon Beacons.
Kate Madison directed the film while playing Elgarain herself. Original characters like Elgarain expanded the Dúnedain bloodline beyond established figures. Danny George appeared as Dirhaborn, another Ranger.
By March 2010, the film reached almost one million hits at online streaming media. The project won the 2010 London Independent Film Festival in the category Best Micro-Budget Feature. It debuted at Ring*Con 2009 before being streamed for free on DailyMotion and YouTube.
