The community officially incorporated as Boonesborough in 1831. The spelling shift from Boonesborough to Boonsboro happened gradually through common usage rather than legislative decree.
Two battles occurred within the present borders of Boonsboro during the American Civil War. General Buford engaged Stuart's Confederate Cavalry at this location on the 9th of July 1862.
