Black & Veatch began operations in 1915 through a partnership between Ernest Bateman Black and Nathan Thomas Veatch. The two men met at the University of Kansas before forming their new firm with twelve employees.
The company rebuilt Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas, and worked on other installations including Camp Chaffee and Camp Hale. These projects expanded into various military facilities across the Midwest region during the war years.
