The Basketball Africa League is the premier men's professional basketball competition in Africa, co-organized by NBA Africa and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). Founded in 2019 and first played in 2021, twelve clubs compete each season from March through June across three conferences.
The Basketball Africa League was founded on the 16th of February 2019, when the NBA and FIBA announced the competition at a press conference during the 2019 NBA All-Star weekend. The first season was held in 2021, following two postponements caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Five clubs have won the Basketball Africa League championship in its first five seasons: Zamalek (2021), US Monastir (2022), Al Ahly (2023), Petro de Luanda (2024), and Al Ahli Tripoli (2025). Solo Diabate and Michael Fakuade are the only players to hold multiple BAL titles, each having won two championships.
A set of clubs from countries with established basketball histories and larger commercial markets qualify directly for the BAL regular season; Angola, Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal have held those direct berths. The remaining places are filled through the Road to BAL, a multi-round qualifying process that moves from group play through an Elite 16 stage to single-game semi-finals and finals.
Ulrich Chomche of Cameroon became the first former Basketball Africa League player drafted by the NBA, selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft. Khaman Maluach followed on the 25th of June 2025, chosen 10th overall in the 2025 NBA draft, becoming the highest-ranked former BAL player ever selected.
Chris Crawford is the Basketball Africa League's all-time scoring leader, having accumulated 341 points across three seasons of competition.
