Anthony and Joe Russo are directing Avengers: Doomsday. They previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Their return as directors was a condition Robert Downey Jr. set before agreeing to join the film.
Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Doctor Doom after Marvel overhauled the film following the December 2023 firing of Jonathan Majors, who had played the originally planned villain Kang the Conqueror. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained the choice by saying Downey "played the most iconic hero" and now would "play the most iconic villain."
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release in the United States on the 18th of December, 2026. The film was originally planned for a May 2025 release but was delayed due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and production requirements.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, with Jonathan Majors set to play the villain Kang the Conqueror. After Majors was found guilty of harassment and reckless assault in December 2023 and fired by Disney and Marvel Studios, the project was retitled Avengers: Doomsday with Doctor Doom replacing Kang as the central villain.
Avengers: Doomsday was filmed primarily at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, with principal photography running from the 28th of April to the 19th of September, 2025. Location shooting also took place in Bahrain and at Windsor Great Park in England.
