Anthony Daniels played C-3PO in all nine films of the Skywalker saga, from Star Wars in 1977 to The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. He also made a cameo as C-3PO in Rogue One and played a separate character, Tak, in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Daniels turned down his initial invitation to meet director George Lucas in November 1975 and had little interest in science fiction roles. What changed his mind was a concept painting by designer Ralph McQuarrie, whose portrayal of C-3PO conveyed a vulnerability that drew Daniels in.
Anthony Daniels published I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story in hardback in the United Kingdom on the 31st of October 2019 and in the United States on the 5th of November 2019. A Signed Collector's Edition with three exclusive printed cards appeared on the 12th of December 2019.
The C-3PO costume took two hours to put on each day and was built from fibreglass and aluminium, making even simple movements painful. Daniels described gestures as feeling like being stabbed with a pair of scissors, and by the end of his first full day of filming in Tunisia he was covered in scars and bruises.
Daniels credited Sir Alec Guinness with helping him endure the difficult filming conditions on the original Star Wars, saying in 2002 that he firmly believed he would not have completed the shoot without him. He described Guinness in his 2019 memoirs as "the most generous, gentle host."
Daniels was the only original Star Wars cast member to voice his character across all three parts of NPR's radio dramatisations of the trilogy, which ran from 1981 to 1996. Mark Hamill voiced Luke Skywalker in the first two instalments, but Joshua Fardon replaced him for the Return of the Jedi recording.
