The 1932 NFL Playoff Game was an extra game held on the 18th of December 1932 to break a first-place tie between the Chicago Bears and the Portsmouth Spartans. Both teams had finished the regular season with identical 6-1 records and the same winning percentage, leaving the league without a champion under its existing rules.
Severe blizzards and forecasts of extremely cold wind chill made Wrigley Field, the Bears' home stadium, unusable. The game was moved to Chicago Stadium, then the largest indoor arena in the world, with a maximum seating capacity of 26,000.
The field was only 80 yards long and 45 yards wide. The ball was reset 20 yards back whenever a team crossed the 10-yard line. Goal posts were moved from the end lines to the goal lines. Beginning in the 1933 season, the NFL permanently moved goal posts to the goal line, required all plays to start with the ball on or between the hash marks, and made the forward pass legal from anywhere behind the line of scrimmage. The game also directly led to the creation of the NFL Championship Game in 1933, the forerunner to the Super Bowl.
