15760 Albion was discovered in 1992, becoming the first trans-Neptunian object found after Pluto and Charon. Decoding its provisional designation, QB1, shows it was the twenty-seventh object found in the second half of August that year.
David C. Jewitt and Jane X. Luu discovered 15760 Albion at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii. They nicknamed their find Smiley before it received an official name.
15760 Albion gave rise to the term cubewano because of its provisional designation, QB1. Astronomers used that label to name the whole class of objects sharing Albion's cold classical Kuiper belt orbit.
15760 Albion is named after Albion, the island-dwelling primeval man from the mythology of English poet and painter William Blake (1757-1827). The Minor Planet Center published the official naming citation on the 31st of January 2018.
Estimates of 15760 Albion's diameter vary. A generic magnitude-to-diameter conversion gives about 167 kilometers, or 107 miles, while Mike Brown estimates a mean diameter of about 108 kilometers, or 66 miles, and considers the object too small to be a dwarf planet candidate.
The discoverers originally proposed the name Smiley for 15760 Albion. That name was already used for asteroid 1613 Smiley, honoring American astronomer Charles Hugh Smiley, so the name Albion was chosen instead.
