He demonstrated that the author drew heavily from documented social structures existing in Mississippi during the late nineteenth century. This approach revealed hidden layers of meaning within Faulkner's novels by grounding them in verified history. Readers discovered that the fictional landscape mirrored real struggles over race and class in the American South.

The Cause of All Nations: An International History of the American Civil War arrived in print during 2015 with a global perspective. Doyle argued that the conflict was not merely an internal American dispute but a world-shaping event with international consequences. His research highlighted how foreign governments viewed the war and how it affected diplomatic relations across continents. The book showed that European powers closely monitored the outcome because their own stability depended on the result. This framing shifted the conversation away from purely domestic narratives toward a broader geopolitical context.

Secession as an International Phenomenon: From America's Civil War to Contemporary Separatist Movements appeared in 2010 exploring modern political struggles. Doyle examined how ideas about national identity drove both historical and current separatist campaigns around the globe. He compared the American experience with similar movements in Italy and other regions through his work Nations Divided published in 2002. The text analyzed how groups seeking independence used historical precedents to justify their claims today. These studies provided tools for understanding ongoing conflicts without reducing them to simple binary choices.

Doyle received appointment as a Fellow at the National Humanities Center located in Research Triangle Park North Carolina. He also serves as a Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars focusing on global affairs. His retirement from the University of South Carolina marked the end of decades spent teaching history courses.
