John Bull left England in October 1613 to flee charges of adultery and assault after sleeping with a maidservant while his wife slept with another maid. He was pursued by King James and George Abbot, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and never returned to England.
John Bull was forced to leave his post at Gresham College on the 20th of December 1607 after fathering a child pre-maritally with Elizabeth Walter. He lost his quarters and income, and although he filed for a marriage licence two days later, he never returned to the college.
John Bull died in Antwerp and was buried on the 15th of March 1628 in the cemetery next to the cathedral. He had served as principal organist at Antwerp Cathedral from 1617 until his death.
John Bull contributed seven keyboard pieces to the 1612 or 1613 collection Parthenia, which was dedicated to the 15-year-old Princess Elizabeth. This publication remains his only known work, alongside his anthem God the father, God the son written for the princess's wedding.
